Fleetwood Mac co-founding member and influential blues-rock guitarist Peter Green has died at the age of 73. According to the BBC, solicitors acting on behalf of his family said in a statement: “It is with great sadness that the family of Peter Green announce his death this weekend, peacefully in his sleep. A further statement will be provided in the coming days.”
Green was one of eight Fleetwood Mac members enlisted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. Likewise, he was also placed at number 58 on Rolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Guitarists list.
The London-born blues guitarist gained his popularity when he was handpicked to supplant the position of Eric Clapton in Bluesbreakers in 1965.
The guitarist Green and the drummer Mick Fleetwood formed the band, Fleetwood Mac, in 1967. The pair then recruited John McVie, another veteran of the Bluesbreakers, in the band. The instrumental “Albatross”, reached number one on the British singles chart, with a follow-up single “Man of the World” culminating at number two.
