Back in 2016, Tool debuted a reimagined extended version of “Opiate,” the title track of their debut EP, which has since become a familiar feature of their show, including on the group’s current tour.
The original version of “Opiate” appeared in 1992 of the EP of the same name, with the title track closing out the six-song set. Though never released as a single, it remained one of the band’s most recognizable songs from their early works.
The “Opiate²” arrival comes on the heels of the band’s recent announcement that an ultra-deluxe vinyl edition of Fear Inoculum is on its way April 8. Limited edition signed versions have been going for big bucks on the band’s current tour, but a wider release is coming in April.
Alongside the new track, a Blu-ray edition of the music video for “Opiate2” (the band’s first in 15 years) will release on March 18, and it’s available for pre-order now. Visual artist Dominic Hailstone teamed up with the band on the 10-minute film, which features interviews and insights from some of the band’s collaborators and friends in addition to the music video itself. Tool fans may also recognize Hailstone’s work from the filmed visual components used on Tool’s current Fear Inoculum tour.
